What is TIN & CIN?

Any Business that's looking to sell a product or service is required to have what's called Taxpayer Identification Number or TIN. Tax number TIN is provided by Tax Department of India to enable the method of collection, processing, accounting and monitoring of direct taxes completely online.

It enables the Government to maintain a single record of all Taxpayers and their transactions which helps in increasing transparency and accountability.It is is required for, Traders,Manufacturers Exporters and basically any start-up or small medium enterprise that is looking to sell a product or service.

Steps for registering for TIN :

  1. Go to NSDL website and fill the registration form.
  2. Once you submit your application you will receive a 15 digit acknowledgment number.


Once the applications is received, NSDL will provide a user-id and password which will be sent to email id provided in the application form. Login to the ITD site and conduct the data transmission test according to the directions provided. After successfully running the Test you can start filing of e-Returns using a unique e-Return Intermediary Identification Number. ERIIN and password. 

What is CIN?
Corporate Identification Number or Corporate Identity Number CIN is a 21 digit alpha-numeric number provided to all One Person Companies,Private Limited Companies, Companies owned by Central or State Government of India, Not-for-Profit organisation, etc. which are registered in India. CIN number is given by Registrar of CompaniesRoC of various states under MCA Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

  • State code Example: DL- Delhi
  • Type of Company Example: PLC - Public Limited Company
  • Listing status Example: L - Listed

How to get CIN?
Section 73 of the Companies Act, 2013 states &ldquoOn and from the date mentioned in the certificate of incorporation issued under sub-section 2, the Registrar shall allot to the company a corporate identity number, which shall be a distinct identity for the company and which shall also be included in the certificate.&rdquo Therefore, a CIN number is automatically allotted to the company when it is incorporated and approved by the Registrar of Companies.
